4 NIGHTS LAMU
Lamu is a place like no other, a peaceful tropical island where life is lived at it’s own relaxed rhythm, but a place whose history is as mysterious and fascinating as the winding streets of it’s medieval stone town. The island itself is a beautiful place of rolling dunes and endless beaches, where tiny villages nestle among coconut and mango plantations and lateen sailed dhows ply the waters. But Lamu’s real attraction is its Old town.
Lamu Town is the oldest living Swahili town in Kenya. The town dates back to the 12th century. Due to its unique location along Arabic, Indian and African trade routes, Lamu Kenya flourished as a maritime hub whose main population, the Swahili, engaged in international trade, fishing and farming. For the traveller, Lamu is a hypnotically exotic experience, made even more enjoyable by the relaxed and welcoming attitudes of the locals. To visit Lamu is to enter another world, and the visitor finds themselves becoming a part of this world.
Life slows down, and long days are spent strolling along the waterfront, exploring the town or relaxing on the beaches. Dhow safaris can take you beyond Lamu into the surrounding archipelago, where isolated villages, ancient ruins and a few luxurious and exclusive resorts lie hidden among the islands of Manda, Siyu, Pate and Kiwayu. This idyllic island speaks to the heart and soul, and a trip to Lamu is a romantic experience that can become a lifelong affair.

Shela Lamu
Shela Village is located practically a stone’s throw away from Lamu Town. From a torrid history that saw its defeat by Lamu in 1813, the village is known primarily for its pristine white beaches that offer splendid views of Lamu Island. It is well known as a place where celebrities own many houses along the shoreline which they have converted into guest houses.
The village is also popular with ex-pats and tourists who can often be seen buying trinkets and other items at the various market stalls. Donkey-carts are very popular in the village as a mode of transport.
If you are looking for a more quiet Lamu Holiday, Shela Lamu is the place to be. You will however not escape interactions with the native people of the village but everyone here minds their own business.
Things to do in Lamu
Lamu boasts a lot of activities to engage in and sights to visit. Being a many-centuries-old town, the town boasts Swahili architecture and relics. The Lamu Museum holds some very interesting and curious pieces of art and sculpture. Siyu Fort is another interesting place to visit as it exudes some of the charm and tenacity of Island in its heyday as a route for trading.
Don’t miss out on the evening traditional Dhow cruises a must-do activity in Lamu.
Watersports are plentiful in Lamu, with many companies offering skiing, sailing, and swimming in the refreshing waters. Or perhaps a simple sunset walk on the magnificent beaches should be enough.
